Cheering on GNU/Linux

A rave post on how great the GNU/Linux system is for software development. …

Well met,

This is a post directed toward software developers, especially those that love to explore programming languages, development tools and free stuff.

Install GNU/Linux. Do. GNU/Linux is free. Ok, not only is the operating system free of charge and access restrictions but it is surrounded by many thousands of systems and applications. These applications come with source code that can be used to explore into, learn from, build on, perhaps experience eureka. These free to learn from systems can be used to build up world class, world scale web sites.

Honing development skills on a GNU/Linux is limited only by time, drive and imagination.

A favourites list

  • Fedora GNU/Linux
  • KDE
  • Opera
  • Konsole
  • bash
  • vim
  • cobc
  • gforth
  • valac
  • fossil

Hours spent with Opera and terminals. Highly efficient.

And then there was yum. The yum list is a treasure trove of things to build with. (And by that I mean any GNU/Linux distribution's pile of packages). Run your own website testhead with full on web servers. Setup a MediaWiki, a Moodle. Program in C, D, Fortran, COBOL, PHP, Perl, Python, Forth, Java, Ada, and well, nearly any language you may hear of. Link them together. Write a book with Tex, a magazine with Scribus, a piece of art with the GIMP.

Endless potential. Endless. Install GNU/Linux.

Cheers,
Brian
